I run therefore I am

While running my ten miler yesterday, I was listening to a reading of the last chapter of George Sheean's book "Running and Being". It got me to thinking about how we as humans are defined by what we do. We what we are because of what we actually do. Runner, writer, singer, composer, conductor, theologian, apologist . . . Parent, father, uncle, brother, child adult. . . Descartes simple statement , "Je pense, alors je suis" (I think, therefore I am) reminds us of the fact that we can have impact on the world because of what we are doing.

I have run 1200 plus miles this year. I can assure you that it has defined me. Three marathons, training miles, multiple races, a few age group medals and many running friends have helped to shape my life.

The same can be said about my family, my students, my church choir, and the Covington Conyers Choral Guild. It is my task to keep on keeping on because there are many horizons ahead in 2011. It is interesting to think that we are not what we once were because we are constantly becoming who we are.

I loved today's 3 miler. 28:37. I think I can become a sub 27 5k runner if I keep on!

Superb 10 miler today

Felt great went at a nice steady pace. I hope the Half Marathon feels this good next week. So far the weather in Columbus looks like it will be perfect. Some thoughts came up during my run today, but I'm stopping here to go to a movie.

Beautiful day for a run

I left the house at noon and went out for a fantastic run. 5 miles . . . I feel good enough to do more, but I'm holding off for some speedwork tomorrow. I am definitely ready to run the Red Nose Half Marathon in Columbus, Georgia. I can only hope the weather will be as great as it was today.Last year it was very cold and I had a terrible cough. Then I hit a deer in Jackson, Georgia on the way home.

I'm planning to break 2:25 in this run. It is a beautiful course on the Columbus and Pheonix City River Walks.

Looking forward to a nice, easy long run tomorrow. I will reach my goal of 1200 miles in 2010.

My need for speed

Completed 6X400 at less than 2:15 each. This is part of my quest to complete a 27 minute 5k this year and perhaps complete the marathon in less than 5:30. Marathon training has not begun yet. The trick will be to maintain a balance between distance and speed. I have found that it is very difficult to maintain speed when building distance long runs. This has probably kept me injury free during the last 5 years of running. I will try to do both while being mindful of my body.

Chaos Theory of Running

Sometimes it is best to just run without a plan. Then as you run that day you can decide what needs to be done based upon things like the weather and how you feel. I feel great today, so who knows what I'm gonna do!

Will to run Day 1

After listening to many running podcasts, I have decided to start a running blog. I am a music teacher from Covington, Georgia. I have run 8 marathons in the past 2 years. I am currently planning to run two Half Marathons in January. We'll see how this blog develops. Had a great 3 mile training run today. Thinking about my next marathon. Haven't officially signed up for one yet. Random thoughts will be added to this blog as I run throughout the coming year.
